|| Chapter 1 ||

Okay, I admit.

Animals are my life, especially marine animals. I always find them fascinating and inspiring. Every morning, I would watch the Discovery Channel or Animal Planet before leaving for uni. I am currently studying a veterinarian course in Melbourne University. I volunteer at the Melbourne Zoo and I go there during my free time.

Today, I was uni-free, so I had the opportunity to spend some time at the zoo. I loved the zoo. The animals and I got along extremely well. My human friends would think I'm crazy and they always called me 'Dr Dolittle'.

Sadly, due to the allergies of my sister, Quinn, I don't have any pets. She's great and has always been there for me. Her social life is more interesting than mine; and that is saying something because she is only seventeen.

I grabbed my keys to the car and headed straight for the door. Taking the elevator down to the car park, I walked to my car, a red little Carola. It was tiny but I was proud of it. I drove out of the car park and onto the freeway.

"Morning Joe," I greeted as I made my way through the office door. He flashed me his dashing smile with his perfectly shaped teeth and cute little dimples. He was the head zoo-keeper and a kind-hearted man who gave the world to the animals. I respected the guy; even though he was adorable and was way out of my league.

Today I was on chick-hatching duty. Letting my excitement spiral out of control, I grabbed a pen, my clipboard and headed straight for the chicken incubator. I wore my lab coat and sat down on the chair; my eyes firmly kept on the round glass window, staring at several hundreds of eggs. If I squinted my eyes a little, I can slowly make out some of the cracks on the egg shells.

I was probably staring into space for about ten minutes when I heard a loud crack. I shot my eyes on the egg and two little feet popped out. One by one, the eggs started hatching. I quickly grabbed my pen and my clipboard as I scribbled endless notes. I pressed my hands on the warm glass door. The little yellow chicks were ADORABLE! I grinned at them; if only I could sneak one in my pocket...

Mesmerized in my own world, I barely even heard the group of screaming girls running outside the door. I couldn't help but peek through the little glass window. They disappeared through the hallway.

They must've let Leo out again, I thought. Leo was our most loyal male lion. He was really friendly but he gets intimidated in front of visitors.

The back door suddenly opened and a black haired boy snuck in.

I yelped and rested my hand on my chest to steady my heart rate. He turned around and saw me in shock, pointing his index finger to his perfectly shaped lips.

"Sorry," he whispered, "I didn't mean to startle you." The first thing I picked up on was his British accent. His hazel eyes were gleaming in the sunlight and his eyelashes fluttered with embarrassment. He was wearing a really stylish Varsity jacket and black Reebok shoes. Hair perfectly quiffed and studs in both ears. Several tattoos were visible on his arm, a really obvious one was a black microphone on his right arm and it looked bloody amazing.

He's SO good-looking, I thought. I saw pink shades growing on his cheeks and he was looking on the ground. I blushed furiously and noticed that I had been observing him a little too much. He stared deeply into my eyes and bit his cheeks. Oh man, those eyes. I tilted my head a little and noticed he had some blood on his arm.

"You're bleeding!" I gasped.

"What?" he looked up and saw the blood stains on his jacket, "oh, must've hit something."

"Come and sit, I'll get some tissues and band-aids," I suggested, patting the stool in front of me. He shrugged and nodded. I came back with a first-aid kit. I dabbed on the wound with some tissues and poured some antiseptic on a cotton. I slowly placed the cotton on the wound and dabbed around it.

"Are you a vet?" he asked.

"Not exactly," I giggled, continuing with my 'surgery'. I finished applying the antiseptic and slowly put a band-aid on. I couldn't help but noticed his muscles and biceps. Must be working out pretty damn hard.

"Thanks," he grinned, slowly pulling down the sleeve of his jacket, "I'm Zayn by the way."

"I'm Skye," I introduced myself.

"Hello," he smiles.

His accent...

"So, Zayn," I started, "what brings you to the Zoo?"

"Oh, you know, just exploring," he replied as-a-matter-of-factly. I nodded to put us out of an awkward situation.

"I should really be getting back to work," I said finally, "my boss will be pissed." I laughed nervously. He lowered his head and nodded in agreement.

"Yeah, me too. I should get back to my friends, don't want to worry them," he said gloomily.

"I understand," I gave him my best smile. He gave me little wave before turning on his heels to the door. I went back to chicken-watching. I heard the door close and I let out a sigh of relief. Well that was weird.

"Hey Skye," Zayn popped his head into the room. I looked up wondering why he was still here. "Do you think maybe I would see you again?"

I flushed and felt my face heat up, I simply replied, "maybe."
