Chapter 2: Robbie

"My father was a tank commander in two wars. He was exposed to unimaginable scenes. This took a terrible toll on his psyche."

This is the way Robbie has chosen to introduce himself to me. Through his father's demeanor, I will understand Robbie as a person and as an addict.

"My father became split: on one hand, he was violent and dangerous and on the other, silent and withdrawn. It was impossible to predict his mood."

Robbie says that his father ran the house as if it were an army base. He was the CO and they were his soldiers. He rode roughshod over all of them. He was an unbearable control freak.

Robbie remembers that according to one of his father's more painful edicts, his mother was forbidden to talk to him. It seems that he had become her
