3 Days Later

She woke up to muffled noises that seemed to be coming from outside the room she was lying in. Staring up at the ceiling she realized she didn’t recognize the room she was in or how she had ended up here.

Not caring much as to how things had happened she closed her eyes again until she realized that there was a soft breathing sound coming from her right side. Slowly opening her eyes she looked towards where the sound came from and saw a sleeping women’s head lying at her bedside. The woman’s hair, she saw, was long and wavy that shone a light brown color when hit by the sun, and it was flowing over the bed and down the side.

Clearing her throat the woman sat up and wiped her hair away from her face, all the while smiling at the girl lying in bed.

“How are you feeling?” the woman asked.

Not knowing what to say, she just nodded. It was visible that the woman took this as a good sign and continued to speak.

“Well that’s good. I was afraid you wouldn’t wake up. Oh, that’s so rude of me,” extending her arm out the woman said, “My name is Ester Donovan. I’m the one who found you and brought you here. Now, if you don’t mind my asking, what is your name dear?”

There was a small pause before the girl hesitantly answered, “I….don’t remember.”

With a confused look Ester excused herself from the room.

After several minutes, Ester came back looking even more confused than when she had left. As she sat down she looked at the girl and slowly said, “Well, they don’t seem to have any records of you. They took a blood sample when you first arrived to try and identify who you are but they couldn’t find anything. It’s like you just appeared out of nowhere. Do you remember who your parents are or where you came from? Do you even remember what happened the night we found you?”

The girl looked at her blankly, shook her head, and again said, “I don’t remember.”

“Oh dear. Well the night we found you I was coming home from a late run to the grocery store, when I thought I saw someone running across the parking lot. Afraid, I called my husband so I could have him on the line just in case something bad happened. I was putting my groceries in the car when I saw you trying to cross the street. But there was something odd to the way you were running so I told my husband and he said he was coming to get me and hung up. Curious to what was happening I went over to where I had last seen you and sure enough you were there lying on the floor. There was blood everywhere so I called the police.

“You looked so small huddled there on the floor that I got down on my knees and put your head on my lap holding you close. You kept repeating something over and over but I couldn't quite figure out what it was. Not knowing what else to do I just kept whispering into your ear that everything was going to be okay. I was so afraid you might die because you had lost so much blood. And what made things worse was that your injury was on your head." She paused before continuing to explain.

“My husband was the first to arrive and told me to not move you because you could have a concussion so I just held onto you tighter when you started to scream. By the time the police and ambulance finally arrived you had gone limp and I was afraid you might have died but the paramedic assured me you still had a slight heartbeat but they had to get you to the hospital quick. So I rode with you in the ambulance, and even when you seemed to wake up and dig your nails into me I never let go.

“When they finally cleaned you up and checked your wounds at the hospital they told me that there was someone else’s blood on your clothes but they couldn’t identify whose blood it was. So for the past three days I’ve been here watching over you in hopes that you would wake up and now that you have I’m so happy!” She said with huge relief.

Somewhere in between her recounting of what happened, Ester had begun crying. But as she finished she wiped her tears away with a smile and just looked at the girl before continuing. “Well since you don’t remember your name and I have to call you by something, do you mind if I give you a name?” Ester asked with a glint of hope in her eyes and then quickly adding, “Just until you can remember your real name that is.”

When she didn’t object, Ester took it as a go-ahead. “To be honest I’ve always wanted a girl named Sam. I don’t know if that would be weird but if you don’t mind I would love to give you the name  Sam,” Ester said with a big smile on her face.

“Sam?” the girl said, testing it on her lips before they started to curve up with the sound of it, “Sam! My name is Sam.” The girl claimed.

Clapping her hands together Ester said, “So that does it, from now on we will call you Sam.”

“We?” Sam asked.

“Yes Sam. We, as in my husband and I,” Ester said as she pointed behind her to show a large man sitting on the couch with a small boy wrapped in his arms, “my son, and everyone else. So from now on your name will be Sam Donovan and you will be living with us until we can find your real family. Is that okay?”

Not knowing how to react to having a new name and a new family, Sam just nodded.
