Due to its rarity, many people haven't heard of pyromania. So what is it...?

What is Pyromania?

Pyromania is a rare, pathological disorder where one intentionally and repeatedly sets fires. People with the disorder have an obsession with fire and objects related to it. They are unable to control their urge to set fires, may engage in other fire-related activities and feel a relief or release of anxiety or tension once a fire is set.

What Are The Symptoms?

Pyromania can affect those of any ages but can more commonly be found in males. The disorder is more likely to occur in people who struggle with social skills or learning disabilities. Symptoms include having an attraction to fire, setting multiple fires at once on purpose, feeling excited or tense before setting a fire and feeling relief after the result of a fire. Signs may include matches, lighters, burn holes in carpet or fabric, burnt pieces of paper and other flammable objects being found near garbage cans, sinks or stoves. Somone with pyromania may seem obsessed with fire and frequently visit fire departments and help with or watch fires. There are five categories that adolescents with the disorder would fall under. Those wanting to get attention from antisocial adults, showing other types of bad behavior, dealing with cognitive impairment, those who are paranoid, psychotic and even suicidal and those crying out for help.

What Are The Causes?

The exact cause of Pyromania is unknown but is often connected to other mental disorders and conditions. Those with pyromania set fires to release built-up tension, not to commit crimes or gain something from their actions. Due to its rarity, not many studies have been conducted to study pyromania but some specialists think it may have to do with genetics or behavioral addictions.

When Do You See A Doctor?

Since pyromania is very serious, it is extremely important to get treatment as soon after diagnosis as possible. Those who develop it as a child usually continue to have it into their adult years and doesn't stop on its own or after punishment. Cognitive behavior therapy is the main type of therapy used to treat pyromania. Using therapy, the patient can learn to understand what is going on with their emotions and learn how to control them. Seeing the effect fires have on burn victims and taking fire safety courses can also be beneficial. Family counseling can help the patients family members understand the situation and how to keep everyone safe.
