That Day

Mother pushes my hand under the floorboards

"Mommy" I whimper, but she motions for me to be quiet.

"We heard yas, come out or we'll find you and kill ya"

Mother knows what he said is true. Slowly she crawls out from under the table and stands up.

I choke back tears.

"I never said I'd spare ya" the man says as he pulls the trigger.

Mother falls to the floor, the bullet wound between her eyes, dripping down her nose.

All I can do is stay quiet, and that feels the worst, knowing you can't do anything to help.

The men loot the house and leave, both of my parents unconscious on the floor.

Once they are gone I crawl out of my hiding place and to mother.

"Mommy" I whimper even though I know she's not going to answer.

Then I cried and slipped into unconsciousness.
