Alarm Call

I am at one with myself

In a vacuum of peace and calm.

Of thought – I have none.

Then: The sound of my alarm.

Not a ringing or a beeping.

Not the radio or a voice,

But the shouting and the shrieking

Of the kids I had from choice!

Ben and Dani I have called them

And of noise they know no shame.

“Loud is better” is their motto.

My tries to shush them all in vain.

“He pushed!” “She pinched me!” is their greeting,

Sleepy faces red with rage,

“Mom, I want a different sister”

”I want a brother more my age”

“Children please, it’s just five thirty.

Give me a few minutes more.”

My headache will be starting early

As they run and slam the door.

Well, at least I should be grateful

That at least it’s getting light.

And the fact that it’s a Sunday

And they’ll stay with Nan tonight!
