“But—”

“No.”

“Gab—”

No.

“Liz, Lil—”

“You heard her, Logan. She said no.” Lizzie pipes up, her fingers intertwined with Joe’s as she glares over at my boyfriend.

“Why?” He’s pretty much snarling at all of us by now.

“Because you’d say no. As you do.” I mumble, not sure whether he’s heard me but not really caring all that much either. In the office, Brett talks hurriedly to a calm-sounding Daz. I can’t make out what he’s saying, but who would with all these people crowding around Logan, trying to knock sense into him?

“Look, he’s not living with us and that’s that.” The other two boys hesitate from agreeing with him; we’ll kill them if they do. Instead, they groan at the fact that he’s purposely being difficult.

“And who are you to say he isn’t living with us?”

“Your boyfriend!”

“And? If you’re my boyfriend, does that automatically mean that you have to tell me what to do and I have to obey or something? That’s what one of your past girlfriends might have done, Logan, but I’m no—”

“Okay!” Lili yells, and Noah glares at us for making her strain her voice whilst trying to get us to be quiet.

I usually don’t argue with Logan like I just did, but just because we’re going out, it don’t mean he owns me. I can make decisions on my own, and since it was five against one, not including Daz, it was decided that Brett would live with us. He’s a member of Screaming Innocence, meaning that he shouldn’t be on his own while the band is together, deciding on their tour songs and everything else. As the new member, he should be able to do whatever we do, and go wherever we go. That’s the way I see it, anyway.

Noah and Joe wouldn’t have agreed at first, so it would have been three against three, but Joe agreed after Lizzie stared into his eyes for about ten minutes, and Lili was getting mad at Noah about it. I guess, with normal boyfriends, that crap actually works! Mine, on the other hand, chooses to be difficult at either the stupidest or the most important times. I say this is one of the important times.

“I’m not going to have that...that thing...all over you guys!” This time, Logan is referring to all three of us. Noah hesitates from agreeing, but eventually sighs.

“I’m gonna try and behave,” Did he just say the B-word? “But I promise nothing, because I swear to God, if he ever tries making a move on you, Lili, he’s not even going to live to see the sun tomorrow morning.”

“Noted.” Lili replies, and although she’s still trying to look fierce, her smile lets her down.

“Can you not smile!?” Logan and I yell at the same time. “He’s being stupidly jealous!”

“And she’s being ridiculously cool with the fact that there’s gonna be another guy living with us! I didn’t agree with this and I don’t think the other boys would either! I—”

“Logan,” The door to Daz’s office is open, and Daz himself rests against the doorframe, his arms crossed against his chest, sleeves rolled up to his elbows. How does that freaking thirty-something year old man manage to pull off a teenager look!? “Brett has agreed to forget anything that has happened today and is willing to start over. He does not wish to have any disagreements with any of you, so you will accept him as both a new band member and roommate. Is that understood?”

We girls nod eagerly, even though our manager is actually speaking to Logan, while the boys shift a little uncomfortably. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Brett shuffling over, and he leans down to whisper in my ear.

“Sorry about all this. I didn’t mean to make you get into an argument with your boyfriend. You know, you don’t have to do all this...”

“It’s cool!” Lili pipes in this time, looking at him with her ‘I’m friends with absolutely everyone!’ smile, which is just so totally true. She hops forward, although her arms are hugging her stomach protectively as she does so. “I’m afraid you’re going to have to get used to it though. The boys are over-protective and easily get jealous, unfortunately. Don’t worry though; as long as you stay out of their way, they won’t pull your limbs out of your sockets and feed them to wild animals.”

Surprisingly enough, Brett laughs. Anyone else would have probably flinched, or looked at the guys, suddenly intimidated. But no...He chose to just laugh it off instead. Brave guy! I shoot my own boyfriend a glare as he sends imaginary daggers toward the boy, and I turn away.

“Well, Brett,” I put on my best friendly smile, and reach out to tug on the sleeve of his shirt. “I say that the only way you can be a member of our band is to...agree to race me all the way to the limo!” And just like that, I take off down the stairs, with the new, hot guy on my tail. I can clearly hear his laughter down the hall. I think he’s letting me win.

No, this isn’t to make Logan jealous or to make Lili suspicious. It’s to make Brett feel like he belongs. I know too well what it’s like to not be wanted; to be hated. And just because he’s good enough to be in Screaming Innocence, doesn’t give anyone the right to bully him just because three really immature guys think that he’s going to hit on their girlfriends. Brett isn’t that kind of guy and, besides, he’s...already dating someone...although I can’t tell who. They’re in some sort of secret relationship for the time being.

I sprint past Dad and Chris as they walk out of Richard’s office. I know that there is another guy there, so I can only assume that it’s another one of the bodyguards that took Rich’s spot when he had to come and hold the boys behind. Chris raises an eyebrow at seeing that I’m being chased by the new band member, and I hear my Dad calling out to the boys ‘who’s that?’

“Hey! You guys run so fast!” Lizzie appears out of nowhere, and my eyes widen.

“How the hell did you get here?” I ask, and she points behind her to reveal an out of breath Joe. “Piggyback?”

“Uh-huh.”

“That’s one thing boyfriends are good for...”

“True, that!”

“I think I won, eh?” We both turn to the voice, to see Brett in the backseat with a rather sweet, amused smile on his lips. That makes me pout. Whether it’s because he looks as innocent as I do when I do that too, or because he’s won, I don’t know. But it must be both.

“Today, yes. You’re the winner. Don’t be so sure about tomorrow.” Lili winks, coming up behind me. “Gab likes winning. As do we. So if you ever happen to have another race with us, it’s only fair that we warn you about the fact that you’re not going to win so easily next time.”

“There’s gonna be a next time?” He groans.

We all laugh.

“Yup!” Lizzie answers and, not able to help myself, I comment after that.

“And a time after that...and a time after that...”
