Chapter 5: muscles tense waiting for the sweat embrace of night

I stared up at the sun as it dips down below the earth. Color streaks across the sky flooding the earth in all it's brilliance. Ordinary things you once took for granted become all the more beautiful when your about to die. I lied to Dan when I said they wouldn't send many people after me. In truth I knew swarms of soldiers and officers were already scouting out the area for the best tactical advantage.

I listened to their cars flying across the desert land as they prepared their attack. Taking in someone with as many kills as I've had would be a major priority. Especially considering what I'd done to Yule.

A wicked smile spread across my face as I took another swig of the wine. Yes I wasn't twenty one but considering the fact I've been fighting these beasts since I was fourteen you'd think I'd earned myself a drink.

Finally the last rays of light trickled across the sky eventually being consumed in the blackness of night. "Starla Huttsion come surrender your self and you will given the chance of trial" A tall bulk of a man stood off in the distance unable to cross the field of blue.

I stood at the entry way of the house with my hands held up high. I go to take a step forward but stop abruptly. "On second thought come and get me." with the flick of my wrist I whip out my pistol sending six consecutive shots through the air before I leap for the cover of the house walls.

I don't need to see to know they've hit their targets. I hear six bodies fall to the floor then signal to fire sending hundreds of bullets raining down from the sky. None of them come close. As they reload I leap across the courtyard falling perfectly into my home made trench.

There's only one of me but at least thirty of them. What a poor disadvantage they have. Eight years of practicing with rifles has taught me one thing: it's not the power of the gun that matters but the power of the person firing it.

Some how they manage to destroy the main beam supporters making the whole first building crumble before my eyes. The dust clears and suddenly we all have the perfect view of each other. Their numbers vanish as each shot brings down another and another. Twenty are left, then ten, then six. Without warning the whole ground rocks as another bomb goes off. But this time none of the buildings fall. I sink into the safety of the dirt as I try to gather my bearings.

Then I see it. Among the clouds of dense dust drifts tiny specks of blue, hundreds of specks of blue. They blew up the turquoise field. Suddenly all firing has stopped as four figure emerge from destruction.

Yule and another man come forward guarded by two others who bold holding MK 47s. They weren't taking any chances.

"Drop the weapons" said the other man beside Yule. When he was changed he couldn't have been more than thirty but there was no way of telling his true age. Right then I could have shot them, both Yule and the other high ranking officer before the two body guards had a chance to react. Yule knew that but he also knew I wouldn't. It would be pointless, there were hundreds out there waiting to take their places.

I throw my rifles at their feet along with the extra bullets and cartages. "Straut it's not her." That surprised me, the man beside him definitely did not look over two thousand years old but of course thats the point

"Patience Sir, patience." he motioned to one of the guards and he pulled out a small box from his coat pocket.

"What the hell..." I whispered to my self but Yule's eyes flickered to me and I knew he could hear me. His jaw clenched as he took the box and placed in on the ground. He opened the lid and music slowly flooded the air it was a lullaby. My lullaby.

They both watched me trying anticipating my next move. "Where did you get that." Straut smiled as Yules went wide. There was fear there. Genuine fear.

"Will you come with us please?"

I nervous laugh fluttered through my lips, "You have to be joking. The hell I'm going with you willingly. The two men stepped forward ready to take me by force when Yule stood up and stopped them. He walked out of the room disappearing for a moment before returning with my pathetic excuse for a father in his arms.

"It wont be hard to snap his neck."

"No it wont." I retorted without the lightest bit of consern.

He looked at me interested, "You risk your life for your brother but your father you care nothing about?"

I shook my head, "Not in the least" I ignored the bright blue eyes that stared at my pleading for me to show mercy.

"The what do you want?"

"Your bargaining with me?" I say in genuine surprise.

"Not if you don't hurry your ass up and choose already!" snapped Yule. He seemed flustered almost, as if he was suddenly following a foreign path. Which he was, vampires never gave humans choice. We were beneath notice to them except now? What was different?

"My brother, you will release my brother."

Straut nodded, "It will be done, he will before morning."

"No," I said not looking at Straut but at Yule, "take him to - take him to Alaska." Yule nodded not needing an explanation of why. Alaska was almost completely shrouded in darkness this time of year, it was my brother's best chance at a real life.

"He will be taken care of, money, boarding. The Nest there will take care of him." I looked at Straut, thanking him silently. The thought of Owen living the true life as a vampire frightened me but it was the best for him now that I would be gone.

"And" I said turning back to Yule

"And?" he hissed as he through the small music box against the wall shattering the wood into a pile of splintered oak "What makes you entitled to more?"

I didn't let my mask falter showing my fear at that moment. "Leave my friends alone, leave Ferdinand and his restaurant alone and I will go with you. I will be at your service." ignoring ever instinct I had I bowed before him letting my hair fall to the side leaving the nape of my neck perfectly vulnerable; the true sign of obedience.

He knelt before me as he caught my chin with the tip of his fingers. He held it delicately, carefully as he raised it so our eyes met. "What are you?"
