Asher returned to the Healer’s hut to bid Finn a final farewell. The air was still putrid, though Tailor’s body had been moved to the Butcher’s to be preserved until the company’s return. Thankfully, the Healer was absent. Finn had been left in the care of his mother and John Grocer. They gave Asher a moment alone.
Sitting on the footstool by the bed, he leaned over his friend. There was a fresh smear of salamander guts on the bite marks, and the red swell had spread up past his ankle. Asher’s eyes traced a line from Finn’s foot to his heart.
“They’re giving me a horse,” Asher said.
Finn’s chest expanded softly.
“I get to ride with a Knight. We’re going to find a unicorn.”
A fly landed on Finn’s freckled forehead. Asher brushed it away. The skin was cold.
“See you soon,” Asher said, and he left.
