Chapter 2

I walked in the classroom and quickly glanced around trying to avoid eye contact with anyone, not to my surprise no one expect me and my tutor Miss Clarke was here

It was a Monday morning, meaning that we would have an hour long tutor session today. I braced myself ready for the day, reminding myself to ignore any comments and focus on the ‘actual’ purpose of college, learning.

“Hello Miss Kaya, how was your Christmas?” I smiled genuinely, I really like my tutor so I was actually interested.

“’It was great thanks Khloe, I spent the first half of the holidays up in Scotland with Matthew’s family. Then we travelled over to Turkey to spend the rest of the days with my family. It was absolutely great, we only just got back yesterday. We went hiking, scuba diving, fishing, bungee jumping, the list goes on forever…” By this time I had dazed out of the conversation, Miss Kaya could talk for hours on end.

I gazed down at my watch, 9:05am, my eyes widened and I raised my eyebrow. I gave my watch another glance to double check, 9:06am. The time had actually gone by so fast, we had been talking for 20 minutes, actually she had been talking for 20 minutes. I always arrived 15 minutes early before class just in case of emergencies, I was never late for college.

“Khloe. Khloe. Khloe.”

“Huh” A fuzzled look appeared upon my face.

She laughed. “I said how have your holidays been?”

“Alright” She smiled. Miss Kaya knew I hated talking about myself, there was no confidence when it came to myself. I looked down towards my feet and scrunched my toes together.

I walked quickly towards my table in the front row and took a seat. I gathered my reading book, planner and pencil case from my bag and neatly placed them on the table in front of me. I picked up my book and began reading. I sighed, this was feeling like it was going to be a peaceful day.

“Emily, can you please end your call and switch off that phone of yours” I sniggered in my head at her. For once she isn’t getting her own way, I just wished that this would happen all the time.

I peeked my head above my book and briskly looked at the surroundings around me. Great, I thought, just great. I closed my eyes and took two deep breaths inhaling and exhaling, and then resumed reading my book.

“Class this is Mr Carter, a new student to St Francis this year. He is going to being joining our form for the rest of the year, please be very welcoming towards him. Mr Carter would you like to say a few words about yourself.”

“My name is Deon, as everyone probably already knows.” At this moment I finally glanced up at this “new” boy. I examined him from head to toe slowly taking in every detail about him. He was one of those typical black boys, boastful, thinking he was everything and untouchable. I rolled my eyes and begun to gathered up my belongings and placed them in my bag. I stared towards the clock and waited. 9:48am.

I felt his present glide towards my direction, making my whole body freeze until I could sense he was gone. I usually wouldn’t dare to look up whenever something pasted but something had gotten to me today and I lifted my head to look at him. Just as my eyes directed towards him I realised that this was the worst move I could have made. I mentally yelled at myself for being such a naive little girl.

“Look at this geek, when will she learn that she needs to stay in her place. Does she really think that Deon wants to talk to her.” She burst out into hysterical laughter. “Your just a nobody.” Suddenly everyone started laughing alongside her. I carefully listened for ‘Deon’, he lightly chuckled. I lowered my head down to its lowest point and stared at my feet. All of a sudden I felt someones eyes beaming at me, then footsteps walking to the back. I assumed Deon had looked at me to see if he could find something else to laugh at me about.

“Settle down class. Settle down.” Slowly everyone began to ease up on the laughing and quieten down. I felt Miss Kaya look at me sympathetically, I nodded briefly reassuring her that I was fine. I lifted up my head and gazed at the time 9:59am. I began counting down the seconds down in my head. The bell finally rang. 10:00am.

I waited until the majority of people had left the classroom, I picked up my bag, stood up and walk towards the door. When I reached the door i quickly glanced to my desk to see I had left something. As I done this I noticed something, I second glanced back and there he was, him sitting on my desk.

“Errm, excuse me do you mind not sitting on my desk please.” I began fiddling with my nails staring at the floor. I hoped he wouldn’t cause to much trouble and just listen to what I had asked, although it seemed very unlikely.

“Nope” He smirked at him and began chuckling. I knew that he could sense my intimidation and he was enjoying the fact that he had authority over me. I lifted my eyes up and sighed. I knew there was no point trying to persuade him because he sure wasn’t going to listen. I tried to move, but it was like gravity was pulling me to this spot. He walked towards me and began chuckling again, with that deep voice. His shoulder brushed past me and continued out to the door.

I looked up and turned around and headed towards the door. At least I had something to look forwards to next, I had English.
