Scene 2

A bedroom late at night. RACHEL, a woman in her

mid-thirties is in bed reading from what looks to

be a Kindle. The room is supposed to be modern and

minimalist, but all sorts of crap is strewn across

the floor and on tables. ETHAN walks in.

ETHAN

Hi honey.

Kisses RACHEL on the cheek. RACHEL doesn't react.

RACHEL

When's this gonna stop?

ETHAN

I dunno. Maybe in a few weeks.

RACHEL

Can't you at least make it home in time to walk the

dog?

ETHAN

Walking off stage, followed by the sound of running

water We should just get her a brain chip.

RACHEL

Ethan, that's not just something you get for the dog!

It's not a new TV, it's basically turning her into a

person!

ETHAN enters, brushing his teeth.

ETHAN

So?

RACHEL

So she won't just be Molly anymore! She'll probably

call animal services on us or move out. It's a risky

thing to do.

ETHAN

Alright, fine, I'll walk her.

ETHAN exits and spits into the sink.

RACHEL

I already walked her!

ETHAN

Then why are you complaining?

RACHEL

Because you stay at work until 10 o'clock!

ETHAN comes out of the bathroom.

ETHAN

Rachel, look, I've been really busy. I'm sorry if it

seems like I'm not home anymore, but we've hit the

singularity! Do you know how fucking exciting that is?

RACHEL

I get it, you're going to live forever.

ETHAN

No, we are going to live forever.

RACHEL

I'm not turning into a computer, Ethan.

ETHAN gets into bed.

ETHAN

Well, I'm not going without you. You'll do it

eventually.

RACHEL

Ethan, stop it!

ETHAN

What?

RACHEL

Stop assuming I'm going to change my mind like that!

ETHAN

I'm just joking!

RACHEL

No you're not! I hate it when you think I'm just in one

of my 'phases' and that I'll come to eventually. I've

decided that I'm not transferring my brain. I might

change my mind but it's not because that's the one

logical conclusion. Let me have a choice.

ETHAN

I'm sorry. It's just...I'm a little excited.

RACHEL

I know.

ETHAN

We finished the physics engine today. It works down to

the atom. Can you imagine that? If you had your memory

removed, then you'd never know you were in a machine!

RACHEL

Ethan, I don't want to get my memory removed!

ETHAN

I know!

Pause.

ETHAN

Who would you be if you could, though?

RACHEL

I dunno. Maybe a famous musician?

ETHAN

Smiling I'd be a wizard.

RACHEL

You are such a nerd!

ETHAN

You're just uncreative! You can be a rock star in real

life!

RACHEL

It's too late.

ETHAN

You keep saying that and it will be.

RACHEL

I can't play anything anyway.

ETHAN

You played guitar in college. And ukelele.

RACHEL

Yes, I could be a ukelele rock star.

ETHAN

But you could get good at the guitar!

RACHEL

I guess...

ETHAN

Don't we still have it?

RACHEL

It might be in the attic...

ETHAN

Really?

Runs out of the room. A short time passes and

ETHAN comes back with a guitar in a case.

RACHEL

You found it?

ETHAN

Taking it out. What songs do you remember?

RACHEL

Ethan, it's late.

ETHAN

C'mon, just one.

RACHEL

Ethan, it's late and I need to wake up early. I'll play

you something tomorrow.

ETHAN

Okay.

ETHAN puts the guitar back in the case and puts it

on the floor. They turn out the lights and fall

asleep on opposite sides of the bed.
