Silence

Would it be better if we were met with silence
When we ask "How you are"
Would it be better to seal our lips
As we always do our heart
Would it be better to just shake our head
And move along in peace
Than pause to take a moment
And waste our breath in pleas
We ask our question quickly
Soon to leave you be
Ignoring the haunting stare
For our ears are always hearing
"There's nothing here to see"
Maybe the silence would condemn us
And prompt a further look
A glance behind the shadows
A view within your book
You've pages bathed in crimson red
And chapters soaked in snow
The kind of coldness that does grow
In secrets no one knows
So next time I ask the question
"How are you today?"
Next time won't you answer
With something you're soul cannot say

What I couldn't say when the demons pressed
What I couldn't say when I was distressed
What I couldn't say in the light of day
What I couldn't say even though I'd pay

What I couldn't say was that you're losing me
What I couldn't say was I'm losing me
The darkness deepens
the night prevails
History seeping between rails

You see the silence scares me
Like a monster in the dark
You see the silence scares me
For it leaves a cruel mark
I'd rather hear you chatter about your simple day
Then have silence surround
And never go away
I can't handle the quiet
Although I'm a quiet soul
And I can't take the empty room
And once again make it whole
You see the silence scares me
For it leaves me with myself
Mocking all my victories
and tearing down what's left
You see the silence scares me
And scars me every time
Throwing light on all my failures
Saying I'm a waste of time
Yes you know the silence scares me
That's why you sit so still
Laughing at my trembling form
And the war that'll one day win
