Please don't call me a foster child, because that's not what I am. I'm simply a child in foster care.

It doesn't sound like a difference, but trust me... there is.

When someone says foster child, what do you think of? Pity, maybe. Or you might think of all the bad foster children do, like going to juvie, throwing tantrums, or some other unspeakable thing. I mean why wouldn’t you? The news either shows the awful stories of children in foster care or careless things that they do.

But a child in foster care seems less demeaning.

Saying “foster child” associates all the badness directly to that child; it puts a label on them, even that child is completely innocent. And the truth is that a child in foster care wants one thing:

To be normal.
