I went me yonder for to take a chance,

to give my life for the bold defence;

for to protect my home and love dear,

this little chance gives me nary a fear.

and I feared naught for I did then pray.

A welcome would be so gay,

a dance for to see!

If I do come home to my poor family.

Yet if I do not, and death does take my hand

I'll not be sorrowful nor a return for to demand.

Since I'll be home with my kin,

and the merry men who are therein.

And my family and I shall be twain,

and I'll see my loved ones again,

dear Lord ye have me sain.
