The Ballad of Gentleman Ben

He wandered the west after it was won,
after the brothers' war.
This Gentleman Ben of nowhere place
who lived in the days of yore.

He stole what he needed from the towns,
sometimes a little bit more,
and carried with him a gilded pocket-watch
though no one knew what for.

Just as suddenly as he appeared,
he left, or so they swore.
And no one again saw Gentleman Ben
on land or sea or shore.

They remember him still, if you know to ask
about the man who left many a score,
the fair and nefarious Gentleman Ben
of the old American lore.
