Chapter 16

Tucker, Lisa and I were dancing on the makeshift dance floor. Well, Lisa and Tucker were really just making out like hormonal teenagers and I was dancing with random relatives.

The party was in full swing. Music was blaring loudly from the 8 big speakers in and around the house. There was a makeshift stage where the DJ was stationed. The kitchen counter was full of different foods. There was hardly any place to sit quietly. The tables on the patio were full of different types of drinks, alcoholic and otherwise. And Aunt Mary was having the time of her life.

"You look beautiful honey," Aunty told me, "you actually remind me of a…a friend I had back in college, except she had blue eyes."

"Thanks Aunt Mary! It's your day though, and you outshine us all. You look beautiful. Uncle Rob has been giving death glares all night," I chuckled.

She smile and walked up to Uncle Rob, giving him a quick kiss before greeting a few people and grabbing some gift to go put by her table of gifts.

Uncle Rob turned to me smiling and mouthed a 'very pretty' to me making me blush.

'Today was a fairytale' by Taylor Swift flowed out of the speakers and soon enough I found myself dancing with Uncle Rob. I looked to my left and saw Lisa dancing with Papa instead of Tucker, and on my right Nana was dancing with aunt Mary.

I burst out laughing as they randomly stopped slow dancing and started dancing like they were having muscle spasms and completely off beat. Uncle Rob laughed with me.

"I have never seen you laughing this much pumpkin," he said to me smiling, "Whatever has got you smiling so much better stick around for a long, long time."

"That would be you guys," I smiled at him.

"No," he responded, "You weren't like this any of the other times you came here. I remember how hard we used to try to get you to just smile. Something happened this time. Or is it someone that happen?"

I felt my face get hot as the red colour crept up to my cheeks. I couldn't lie to him, "I met Nate again, and he wants me back, as a friend, but I… I just can't. I need to stay away from him. I can't fall in love with him again. I wouldn't be able to get myself back together when he breaks me," I whisper as a tear slipped out of my eye.

I quickly swept my hand on my cheek removing all evidence of my moment of weakness.

Uncle kissed my forehead, "You know pumpkin, maybe it was better that you two didn't get together back then. I mean, you are older and more mature now. You have your dream job, and maybe after living without you, you are that much more valuable for Nate. Sometimes, the risk is worth taking.

"I know this is cheesy, but I'm gonna say it anyway. When you are old and wrinkly like me-my parents, you're gonna wonder if anything could have happened. So try! And if it doesn't work, then it wasn't meant to be."

"What about me. I finally got my life together and now I should let him barge in again and destroy it again." I questioned. I didn't wait for an answer. I got to my tippy-toes and kissed Uncle's cheek just as the song finished.

I turned and bumped into Tucker, who was watching Lisa hug someone. As if my nudge broke him out of his trance, he shook his head and then ran out the door slamming it behind him. Looks like Lisa forgot to tell him she had a brother coming today.

Uncle walked around me and shook a man's hand who was standing next to Lisa and this unknown person. Then I realized this was probably her brother.

The Lisa let him go and he turned. As soon as I saw his face, I felt like I was going to faint.

"OH Jackie, MY BABY!" Aunt Mary cried, hugging him.

"I don't go by Jackie anymore mum," I heard his oh-so-familiar voice.

Then his eyes met mine.
