Well I stared straight at the sun
'Til I couldn't even see
Inside of an old Chevrolet
Now I'm floating like a butterfly
Without any wings
I've been dreaming of pretty LA
I've been looking for myself in the bottoms of bottles
While I've been blowing
On a swordfishtrombone
I've been burning an endless number of cigarettes
While I've wept in the
Darkness alone
Well I've been deep in gutters
Where there wasn't any light
Scattered and wounded in the Twilight Zone
She came over and I kissed her
The place hushed down to a whisper
I started blowing on a swordfishtrombone
Now I'm watching the rainbirds
Flying above my head
Reflected in a pane of shattered glass
I'm rolling up a joint now
'Cause I need a hit
I want to dig it down into the past
I've been deep down inside the trenches
I've been sleeping in the alley
With heavy metal boxcars pouring steam
And I've been choking on white angel hair
And spitting maggots everywhere
Before I got fed to the Bone Machine
And now the metal nails are showing rust
They're catching moonbeams in the dust
And Dave just called me crying on the phone
He was always so meek and taciturn
But right now his final lesson's learned
I'm blowing on a new swordfishtrombone
You know I've been doing the obituary tap dance
Making up the moves
As I go along
And now my gut is the only thing
That I don't take for granted
My lives are congregating in a song
I wanna see where broken people go
Just to hear them begging
For a home
I can see the fires burning in the black sky
I'm playing this
Brand new swordfishtrombone
