The sky was darker than she had ever seen it, speckled with dots of twinkling stars. She stretched her legs out on the red blanket she was sitting on and looked at the person sitting beside her. He looked almost asleep though he was sitting up. His eyes were open but heavy and the dark circles under his eyes prominent, even at night. She slid her hand forward, just far enough for the tips of their fingers to touch. His eyes snapped open, alert, and trained only on her. She smiled sadly, then gathered the rest of his hand in her own. His alertness seemed to fade as he remembered where they were, where he had taken her. He rubbed his thumb against her hand, reassuring her that he was okay.

"You need to sleep." She said quietly. So quietly that he almost couldn't hear her despite their closeness. He closed his eyes in frustration and sadness, then reopened them.

"You know I can't." He sighed, looking away from her in shame. His eyes widened when he felt her cold fingers gently grab his face, turning his gaze back to her. Her fingers locked in his dark hair, her thumb running over one of the many scars in his face. "I have to be awake. We don't know what he's planning." She let go of him, much to his distaste, and sat upright.

"I need you to sleep. You're right. We don't know what he's planning, but for right now, we're together and he's not here. I need you to sleep because when he comes, we both need to be ready—prepared to fight, and to win. I can't do this without you. We need to do this together."

He leaned forward so their foreheads were touching. She could feel his breath fan onto her face.

"I know." He said. "I wish I could. It's just hard since—" He broke off but she knew exactly what he meant.

"Since the nightmares." She finished for him. He nodded. She gestured one more time for him to sleep, not knowing whether or not he would listen. Much to her surprise, he grabbed her hand and layed down on the blanket, pulling her with him. He pulled her close, so close he could see the golden highlight the sun gave her dark hair. She smiled at him, and he reached out to tuck her hair behind her ear, out of her face. He leaned in close then pressed a soft, barely there kiss to the corner of her jaw. She smiled blissfully.

"You're the only thing that makes them stop."
