Chapter Whatever

Erics POV

I woke up to the sound of my mom screaming, and my dad yelling.

I shifted and found that there was something lying on my chest, moving steadily up and down to the sound of breathing, that wasn’t my own.

More like someone.

Melody.

“Mel, come on, wake up. We need to go to school.” I gently brushed some hair from her face, chuckling slightly at the state of it.

Her hair dried while we were sleeping, and it now stuck up at every angle imaginable, giving the impression of a lion sleeping, which is exactly what she is.

Well… more like a little tiger.

My little tiger, the little tiger that has, not once, but twice saved my life by simply breathing.

Over the past year, my love for her has grown, every time I saw her draw a breath, every time I saw her flutter those long, delicate eyelashes and every time she calls me Erica, my heart became more and more hers.

“Mrrrhhh hrmm?” she mumbled in her sleep.

“Mel. Wakey wakey. OHMIGAWD there’s a baby kitten that needs to be rescued!” I used my best gay guy voice, and, not surprisingly, she woke up in an instant.

“Wh-?! Where?! Wherewherewherewherewherewherewherewhere?!” She started to panic when she couldn’t see a kitten and realized where she was.

“Oh hi, good morning sunshine.” I cooed, looping a lock of her tangled, messy hair around my pointer finger and chuckled again.

“Where’s my new kitten, kitten?” She asked, her big, round, sleepy eyes looking at me with an innocence I didn’t even know she had.

“Er, it sort of… ran away?” I questioned even my own reasoning and looked guiltily at her from under my hair, which she brushed away, only for it to fall back into place and annoy her. Huffing in frustration with me, I tilted my head up so she didn’t get mad and cut my hair off.

“Oh. What time is it?” I checked my phone and sighed with relief.

“It’s only 4:30, we have time,” I nestled down in my blankets, expecting her to do the same, but she just looked at me, with this look in her eyes, a look I couldn’t read and said that she should probably start walking home if she wanted to get to school on time.

“Wait!” I said, reaching for her hand while she got up off the bed.

Raising an eye brow and looking at me again, the look gone from her eyes like it had never existed, she laughed and sat down next to me again, laying her head on my chest making my heart race.

“I’ll drive you home,” I murmured into her hair, stroking it down so she didn’t freak out at me for not telling her how she looked before, and trying to untangle myself from my bed sheets.

“You don’t have to… ok, yeah you do. I’d die if I tried walking home again. But we need to go soooooooonaaaaahhhhhhh.” Dragging her word on as she dragged me out of the safe, warm haven of my bed.

“We’re gonna have to sneak out. As you can probably tell, they’re fighting again…” I ran my hand through my hair and looked at her apologetically. This isn’t what I would want her to wake up to, fighting and the vulgarity of my dad’s slurred words. She deserves so much more than this.
