Until recently, families in Borneo kept the bodies of deceased family members in jars inside their homes. They inserted bamboo tubes into the jar to remove any excess liquids until one year after the death, when they buried what was left of the body in a cemetery.
(Only slightly creepier than keeping grandma's ashes on the mantle)
