My poor Dorothy

Show her mercy

Give her an ounce of respect

I think she is worthy

You would see Over The Rainbow differently now

I can hear in these dark days how

My poor Dorothy is searching

For a way out

Even this young talent

Developed a habit

Of popping pills

Because her life was unbalanced

My poor Dorothy didn't sleep

The directors made her keep

Trudging on for hours

And how my poor Dorothy would weep

They treated her like property

Never cared for her properly

And didn't care about her at all

As long as her performance was quality

And when she couldn't sleep at night

My poor Dorothy was a fright

To see hopped up on those sleeping pills

In the morning light

I wish a rainbow would take her

And the bluebirds would wake her

And my poor Dorothy would be happy

Where there was no one to break her

She was everyone's pin cushion

A sad young woman

No one knew she'd been molested

By her studio chief in their sessions

And if they did they didn't care

They just braided her hair

And heartlessly exploited her

And yet today we aren't aware

We see a technicolor world

And a wistful little girl

Not my poor Dorothy

As her sad fate unfurled

And these days she flies

In those blue bird's happy skies

Where trouble melts like lemon drops

Broken dreams in her still eyes

My poor Dorothy was

Never truly loved because

She was an agenda

Always just a benefit to someone

So I tell Dorothy's story

However dark and gory

Because after what they did to her

She deserves the glory.
