As she sat in the backseat of the vomit coloured taxi, she counted each tree that passed. Her long, black hair that she got from her papa swept over the wind and her fair skin had goosebumps from the cold. Everything around her was… there was no other word for it, bleak. The sky was the same depressing grey as it had been the last week and the earth wasn’t much of an improvement. Every now and then she thought she saw blood splattered around, but brushed it off as just her imagination. Yeah, that’s it, my imagination, she thought.

Suddenly her thoughts were interrupted by a deep, gruff voice, “Hey kid, we’re here.” The taxi driver was a short man and a bit too fat for his clothes too, which smelled of onions and rotten cheese, he got out of the car and went to get her luggage from the truck while the girl looked ahead to her new home for god knows how long.

Everything was surrounded by a big, iron gate that never seemed to end and could easily reach the sky. The prickly vines that covered the gate had grown, already covering half the giant mansion in front of the smelly driver and the amber eyed girl. The building in front of them looked like a haunted house, but as she and the driver entered the place they could tell it looked nothing like what it leads you to believe from the outside.

The house started as a white hallway, it led to a large hall that had multiple doors to its sides and a big staircase that reached the upstairs area, which seemed to be just a long continuous hall with doors every few steps.

The more the black haired girl looked around, the more rage seemed to fill her. She didn’t deserve to be in here, she didn’t belong here. Her hands balled into fists as a tall, skinny woman walked up to her. The driver had long left her by now and the woman who seemed to be in her mid forties but had still kept her beauty stepped in front of her.

“You must be the new addition,” she spoke with disapproval, “Maria Allison, welcome to the Stainfield mental institution. I am your warden and as such you will call me exactly that, warden.” The warden’s voice was cold and emotionless. Maria knew it wasn’t on purpose; the warden looked like the type of person that didn’t interact and was just cold, that fact could be seen in her dark, empty eyes.

“The other girls are all asleep, I had expected you to come earlier,” she explained in distaste, even though Maria didn’t care too much to know. “Follow me,” and with that, the warden walked away with Marie following right behind, as she was told.

The room that the warden had led Marie to was a private one so that she could not harm anyone like she could if she had roommates. The white room had no personality in it whatsoever, but the plainness of the room led her to think of what was happening in her life.

It hadn’t been more than a month ago that she still lived on the farm, with her late papa. Her father and her used to live a peaceful life, breeding animals and growing sunflowers, that was of course until that one day where everything changed.

“Mary, darlin’, how are the pigs doing?” asked her papa as she walked into the house.

“Just fine except for one,” answered Maria with a frown, “I’m worried about Sebastian, he doesn’t look too good, I fear he may not make it to the end of the day!”

“It’s okay my darlin’, if he is that ill them we’ll just put him down.”

“Okay papa, but then that will be the third pig this week,” the frown was still present in Maria’s face but there was a little exciting glint in her eyes as well at the thought of killing, “and we don’t have that much pigs to spare.”

Her father had a small smile on his mouth, “It’ll be okay, Mary.” He reassured.

“If you say so, now let’s go check on Seb.”

As both daughter and papa entered the pen, the dying pig let out a loud whine as if he knew his time was up. Maria’s papa examined the pig and gave her a nod. She knew what the nod meant, it meant that they were going to kill the pig, her father always gave that nod whenever an animal in the farm was about to be put down. It was something he always did and the look in his eyes told her that she could be the one to kill the pig.

“Oh, thank you papa!” exclaimed Maria with a huge smile, getting his unsaid words.

“Alright darlin’, her father said, standing up, “I’ll just go and get the knife.”

Ever since Maria was a little girl, she lived on the farm and she had to learn how to kill the animals and cut them up ready to sell. Now at fifteen years of age, she did that basically everyday and she loved every minute of it. The way she saw it was that everyone dies eventually, why not now?

The tall man that was Maria’s papa came back with a five inch knife in one hand and a university application form in the other, Maria’s application form to be exact. This cannot be good, she thought. Her father was not supposed to find out like this, she was going to tell him tonight, she knew this was going to be trouble.

“Maria Jane Allison, when were you planning on telling me you sent in an application to a university, a part-time course!” her father all but yelled. His face was one of fury. The livid man put the big knife on the flat surface of the opening gate to the pig’s pen and stared at Maria, waiting for an answer.

“I was going to tell you soon papa,” Maria tried to explain, “I want to do a course in teaching, there are great opportunities in educa-“

She was abruptly interrupted by her father before she could even finish. “What? Why would you need to learn about teaching, you will be spending the rest of your life running this farm! You are not going anywhere!” His face was pure rage now and as he ranted on with his speech, something snapped in Maria.

What her father said made her fuel up in anger, how dare he try to control her life, she can do whatever she wants. With that thought in her mind encouraging her, she grabbed the knife on top of the gate and lunged forward, onto her darlin’ papa. Since the ranting man didn’t expect the attack, the knife went straight through his chest, making blood come pouring out of the place where the knife just struck him.

“You can’t tell me what to do.” Maria said with venom, slowly and darkly, staring emotionlessly at her own father’s dead body.
