The next day, Elizabeth told the other people in the house about how betrayed she felt that Evangeline just left them. Mr and Mrs Fickleberry, the twins, Ciara and Elizabeth were sitting around the table eating some oats when she told them.
“Have you seen Evangeline?” she asked, already knowing Evangeline’s whereabouts. The others thought for a while but shook their heads. “I’ve heard that she’s just gone off with Mr Oscar Lafayette to live in his house.” Ciara stopped eating and so did the twins.
“Did she not ask you to come with her last night?” Mrs Fickleberry asked, eating slower and slower.
“If she did, would I have come home so late?” Elizabeth snapped.
“If she did, you wouldn’t have come home at all.”
“She’ll probably come back today, Liz,” Melissa said, trying to reassure the girl.
She didn’t.
“I told you! See, this is the difference between me and Evangeline, if I had the opportunity to live with a wealthy man, I would’ve stayed there a day. A day! Because I have to remember that you guys are the ones who helped me stay alive in this mess we call England.”
