Anaïs sat shivering in her cold room. The sound of yelling and breaking furniture could be heard echoing through the house once more. She could hear her mother's pained screams and her father's angered, abusive yells. She tried to block the pain out; tears were racing down her cheeks. She fought to hold back her emotions.
She listened to the pleas of her mother and the aggressive retorts of her father.
"Luc, she can't marry. She's too little."Screams, yells, the shattering of a pot, footsteps over broken glass. Then silence; for a long time there was no sound, even Anaïs had stopped breathing. Then, the slow thud of boots up the stairs.
