Chapter Three: "And Just When I Thought Things Couldn't Possibly Get Any Worse!"

"Ah hell no…" I said, but at the time, I didn't realize I was saying it out loud, and Mr. Prick heard me.

"Excuse me? What did you just say young lad- Oh no...Valarie? Please don't tell me that's you?" He asked, finally looking up at me.

"Yep, little Quinty, I'm afraid so. And, I see you're one of the professors here now, huh?"

Damn, the last name should've been a dead giveaway! Quintin Fitzgerald, I really should've known! Grrr! As if this day couldn't get any worse! I thought to myself.

"No, actually my father is the professor of this class; I'm the teacher's assistant, and I sometimes take over for him when he's out sick. But, you're a student here now I presume?"

"Mm hmm, my father finally made me come here because of-" I began to say, before he cut me off.

"You're inability to do anything right, ever. I knew it was only a matter of time before you would start coming here." He said.

"Really? Is it so necessary for you to insult me right off the bat? Geez, and you call yourself smart."

"Yes, and for a good reason. Now, please go take your seat." He said, pointing to a desk in the front row.

I balled up my fists, and began to grumble underneath my breath. I couldn't find anything appropriate to say, due to where I was, so I just kept my mouth shut, and I took the assigned seat.

"So, how've you been?" He asked, out of nowhere.

"What?"

"I asked how you've b-" He began to say, before I cut him off.

"Yeah, I got that. But, you were just insulting me, and now you're asking how I've been? What's with you?"

He just shrugged his shoulders, and then said: "I don't know. But, at any rate, tell me how you've been?"

I furrowed my eyebrows at him. "Good…I guess."

He let out a heavy sigh. "You know what? Whatever, I'll just ask your brother then. I heard he's here for training so he can take Professor Herrings place next year?"

"You heard right. But, I highly doubt he'll answer to you for anything, due to y'all being enemies and all."

"So, you mean to tell me he still doesn't like me? Geez, you Brenner's sure do know how to hold a long term grudge."

"Ha-ha-ha, you're hilarious. Anyway, if you don't mind, I'd like to continue this lame excuse of a day. And I swear, if you ask about it, I won't hesitate to blow up your father's classroom with my 'so-called' inabilities."

"Alright, alright, my lips are sealed." He said, and, while keeping a slight smile spread across his face, he went back to doing what he was doing before.

Strange guy. Why can't he just come out and say it? He likes me, and for some reason he thinks that he's the only one who knows. I thought to myself.

After about fifteen more minutes, the classroom was packed full, which gave me a huge sigh of relief, and made me very glad to know that I wasn't the only one in this whole school who didn't have full control of their magical abilities.

Oh yeah, in case you're wondering, Quintin Fitzgerald, or, Quinn as he likes to be called, is an old friend of my family. He's 22-years-old, and my father's best friend's son, but, he's also a real pain in my rear! But, to be honest, I think I can handle him a lot better than Kane can, and I think that's because he doesn't give me as hard a time, due to the fact that he likes me…a little too much actually, and has liked me ever since he and Kane graduated from here six years ago.
