When they arrived at the vacation home Zander ran into the house not caring about the pain his body was wracked with or the fact that he didn’t know who was still in the house all he could think of was getting to Monica. He found her slumped down in a chair in the living room holding onto a gun. When she looked at him, her eyes lit up. Zander pulled her out of the chair and hugged her as tightly as he could.

“I am so sorry.” He mumbled as he kissed the top of her head.

“I killed him,” she cried into his chest.

Zander looked down into her tearful face and knew that she was having a hard time processing what she had done. The first kill was always the hardest.

“Monica listen to me, you had to do it, he would have killed you if you didn’t. He deserved everything he got.” He said as he wiped her tears away.

“I know it’s just,”

“Just nothing, you did the right thing.” He said patting her on the top of her head.

“Are you okay?” Monica asked him as she stared at his bandaged shoulder he had bled through the gauze and his blood was now seeping into his shirt.

“I’m fine it’s just a scratch, let’s go home.”

“But what about all of this, shouldn’t we call the police.”

“Don’t worry about it we’ll take care of everything.” Zander said as he slung his good arm over her shoulder as he led her out of the house.

“How?”

“Don’t worry about it just trust me.” He said as he helped her into the car.

“I had Mac call your doctor he will be waiting for us when we get home so he can look you over.”

“My doctor doesn’t make house calls how did you…” Monica trailed off as Zander shot her a look that told her not to ask. She sat back and just relished in the fact that she was going home a free woman.

Zander stared at Monica’s room door as his foot tapped with anticipation. The doctor finally walked out biding Monica a good night.

“How is she Greg?”

“She’s a little banged up, that guy did a number on her but she’s a strong girl and so is the baby.  They both are fine, she just needs to rest, I gave her a mild sedative so she can sleep tonight. Tomorrow will be rough, make sure she stays in bed and I’ll be back in the afternoon.” He said and Zander let out a sigh of relief. Greg’s eyes dropped to Zander’s shoulder and he frowned.

“Let me look at your shoulder,” he said before walking down the stairs and Zander followed behind him to the kitchen.

“So what are you going to do now?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re attached to her,”

“It’s like Katie all over again.” Zander mumbled

“You’re not still beating yourself up over that are you? That wasn’t your fault, she wouldn’t listen to anyone.” Greg said as he unwrapped the dressing covering the wound and began to clean it.

“I think it would be better if I just left after she has the baby. It’ll be easier that way.”

“If you say so,” Greg mumbled as he began to reseal the wound.

“You need to take it easy too, the hard part is over, go on vacation, get laid, just do something else besides this.” Greg said as he packed up his supplies as Zander slipped into a clean shirt. After seeing Greg out Zander went to check on Monica and found her sound asleep holding a book in her hands. He pulled the book from her hands as he sat down on the edge of the bed and noticed the finger print marks around her neck, her face swollen and red. He knew that she had been in a fight for her life and it made him kick himself even more for not being there to protect her like he was supposed to. He had let his emotions get the best of him; he was no good to her now. Zander stayed with Monica for a few minutes more before going to bed, he had his mind made up once Monica delivered the baby safely he would search for another job.
