The Abyss

The door creaked and foot fell

from within that house something stirred

It came down the hall in response to bell

Which was rang by a neighbour who had cakes to sell

Dark blue paint flaked to the ground

at the feet of the neighbour, who'd come calling

And the stranger who lived there, now house bound

guarded himself, no alarms nor hound

At the flaking door, the neighbour stood

Aware that inside someone drew near

Each warped floorboard; squeaked rotten wood

As the neighbour grew nervous, so darkened her mood

For no one frequented that old house

It was said that inside a monster lived

Each child who passed it, ran by like a mouse

Afraid of being caught, tackle and bouse

And as these thoughts ran through her mind

the neighbour began to fear for her safety

She turned and retreated to the street where she'd find

a normal house with those like her in kind

And so the frail footsteps of the monster inside

diminished, and faltered back to the darkness

to be left alone, unloved and beside

the abyss of old age with no friends to confide
