Sea of Glass: A Mermaid's Dream

A reflection in the water, the only truth to my eyes.

A glass sea that cradles me, whom I despise,

“Unwordly,” they say I am, “Trickery and lies.”

Deaf they are to the cadence of my forlorn cries.

I flail my tail fin and create a soft ripple in the glass

For I pray that my reflection will come to pass.

My father came to me and said, “Oh my little lass,

You should see your unique nature as gold, not brass.”

A grin curls upon my lips for an abrupt while,

I observe my iridescent scales and know I must smile.

How statuesque I am, how mystical do I seem

To all those young, human girls who know how to dream.

A child’s eyes see better; they perceive the beauty in the world

And so I swoosh my tail fin again and leave it unfurled.

I dip into the glassy water, so translucent and so clean,

And I swim in the vast sea as an underwater queen.

The land and water are both my sanctuary; I felt in my hair

When I pondered upon that dock long ago, and breathed in leafy air.

I greet a shark as I swim by and it shares a thoughtful wink

And through a coral city the fish and I dance in sync.

I rise from the ocean waves and slip unto the shore

And sink my hands into the sands, a healing to my core.

I hear shuffle and an icy fear ensnares my every limb.

What if it’s a human presence to morph my fate grim?

Petrified, I am a statue, a stunning mermaid stone,

And as it neared as I feared, it asked, “Are you alone?”

I turn my head to see one of those young human girls

Who cherish the thought of someone like me living in their world.

Her eyes were wide and hypnotized, her jaw was chapfallen,

I offered her a gentle smile, but then I hear a calling.

The mesmeric voice of that man did approach, as expected,

And when he arrived to retrieve the girl, he surely was affected.

He murmured with his entranced lips, “A beauty so unreal.”

The fear diminished from my body and hope I did feel.

The little girl unlatched the necklace that hung across her neck

And handed it with a kind smile and gave my cheek a little peck

She ran to the man who stood there with eyes as blue as sea

And at last he finally said that he believed in dreams like me.

As a resident of land and sea and a beauty seldom found,

If you’re blessed enough to see me, you will see me proud.

I wrote this for a contest on this site that I go on: Tinierme. I was in a hurry because the contest was supposed to end soon, but they didn't post when it would end. I ended up posting it after the contest ended =_=

Well, anyway, it was supposed to be about a mermaid (titled Mermaid Dream) and it was supposed to be a story, but I enjoy writing story-poem thingies.

Tell me what you think? Constructive criticism? O u O
