Recap

I took a quick shower and put on a black dress that went to my knees and a pair of white flip flops. I kept my makeup simple and light, since I didn't care who we were entertaining. I went downstairs to help Parker set the table for dinner, just like always. Dad got home ten minutes later and went to change clothes, and then the doorbell rang.

I pulled open the door to see three people, but the one person I was focused on was the teenage boy with sandy blonde hair. The other two people were his parents I assumed.

"Jake?" I asked, flabbergasted.

He smirked at me, glancing over me for the second time that day...

"Hey Katie," he said still smirking at me.

I was confused! What was he doing here?! All I could do was stand there and gap at them with my mouth open.

"Katie, why are you just standing there? Invite them in!" Mom called from the kitchen.

I stood back and let them in the house, still at a loss for words. My mom knew Jake and his parents?

The woman that looked so much like Jake turned to look at me.

"You've grown up so much Katie. You're a beautiful young woman," she said to me.

"Thanks?" I asked. What else was I supposed to say?

"Hi, I'm Parker," my sister said, stepping away from the bar.

Footsteps sounded on the stairs, signaling Dad's return downstairs. He greeted our guests and sat down at the head of the table.

Mom took a seat at the other end of the table, which left the five of us that remained to find seats on the sides. Parker sat by Dad, I sat beside her, Jake was on my right, with his parents across from us.

"I made meatloaf, I hope it's okay with everyone," Mom said to the table, looking at Jake's parents.

"Oh, it smells lovely," the woman said, picking up her fork.

"Parker, this is Mr and Mrs. Knight. They used to live down the street when you were just a baby," Dad said. "Jake and Katie used to be the best of friends."

"So I hear you go to Grayson School for the Gifted Parker." Mrs. Knight exclaimed. Parker beamed up at her, always excited to talk about her school. She was the favorite child because she was so talented.

"Katie, you've barely touched your food," my mom said, giving me the look.

"I'm not hungry," I mumbled, pushing food around my plate.

Mom and Dad glanced at each other, then glanced at me.

"Katie, eat your food. We are not doing this tonight," Dad told me.

"I said, I'm not hungry," I sneered at him.

"Dammit Katelynn!" He roared, bringing his fist down on the table. For not wanting to make a scene around the guests, he sure was doing a great job.

"Katie, please eat. This is not healthy for you," Mom whispered.

The Knights were looking from me to my parents, feeling the tension in the air.

"Oh, that's rich. Now you decide to actually care and pay attention? So much for the happy little family front you are trying to accomplish," I shouted, jumping up from my seat. Any other day, my parents were down each other's throats. It was a real ending to the night without a screaming fight before bed.

I ran up the stairs to my room, slamming the door behind me. I threw the dress over me and changed into a pair of sweat pants and a baby doll top, wanting this day to be over with already.

I put my earphones in, and sat down at my desk with my sketch pad in front of me. I was so engrossed in my work, I didn't hear my bedroom door open. It wasn't until I saw the plate of food being placed in front of me, that I even noticed someone in the room with me.

I glanced up to see Jake standing behind me, a smirk on his face.

"What do you want?" I snapped, pulling the buds out of my ears.

"That was quite the show you put on down there," he said. "I'm impressed. Your mom wanted me to bring this up to you."

I glanced at the plate before looking back up at him.

"Best friends forever, remember?" Jake said, looking at the pictures I had placed on my walls.

"Forever never lasts." I stated, standing up to face him.

"I'm not that seven year old boy anymore Katie. I could rock your world," he whispered, invading my personal space. Jake reached up to run his finger down my face.

"Don't."

I stepped away from him, trying to calm the fear that raced through me.

"I am not the same stupid kid I was Jake. Pinky promises get broken, and people change. You should stay away from me," I told him.

Jake opened his mouth to reply but a shout downstairs stopped him.

"Until next time, my dear Katie," he said, before walking out of my room.
