Thankfully, both Cass, Jim and Joe were at the ship when we arrived back. I avoided eye contact and tried to shrink into myself as much as possible I had a feeling my punishment was coming any moment now. Cass regarded with narrowed, shrewd eyes, clicking her tongue in contemplation.

“I syppose you can gyt wayter duty,” she said and a few of the others chuckled. It wasn’t ‘you’re getting off easy’ chuckle, but more of an evil one. Even if kitchen duty didn’t sound bad, I had no idea what it was and when it came to pirates, I had no doubt it would unpleasant.

“Alright now. Everyone return to their duties, and steer the ship towards Jekul Island,” Captain Scar issued the order and everyone jumped to do his bidding. I guess when you’re as fearsome as he is; no one dares to question your decisions. I wondered why we were heading there. It wasn’t famous or should I rather say infamous for anything I knew of. I shrugged to myself, not everywhere pirates went had to be bad.

Cass grabbed my arm and started tugging me towards her kitchen and she sent me a smirk that made my stomach uneasy. Couldn’t I just walk the plank?

It was nearing supper time and my arms were ready to fall out of my sockets. Hard work my ass! This was worse than being whipped! Hell, I’d take a vicious flogging any day of the week compared to this. Sweat visibly encased my entire body and I could have probably filled buckets with it.

I was running all over the ship, carrying buckets and buckets of water to put into each section for all the guys that were working and every time they emptied their lot, I had to run and get some more. Withdrawing my hands from the sudsy water, I regarded my angry red palms. It looked as if my hand was cut right across from the indentation of the handle. I winced, knowing it was going to be hurting something fierce in the morning.

“Stop pitying yourself kid and get to work,” Jim ordered me, as he efficiently stacked up the bowls for tonight’s supper. I glared at him, a comeback on the tip of my tongue. Ah, what the hell, I might as well indulge myself.

“Well no one else is going to have any sympathy for me, so I have to.”

He shook his head, adjusting the gaudy red bandana.

“God knows why Captain even bought you. All your good for is getting into trouble and complaining. Hell, if I didn’t know better I’d say you’re a woman,” he remarked and then started to laugh raucously. I sent him a glare and said no more on the subject, in case that careless remark turned into a suspicion. Besides, there was no way I was going to pick a fight with that muscled guy.

“I’m a good worker,” I muttered under my breath, feeling like a sulky child and continued to wash the dishes for supper. After the rough day I had, my makeshift bed on the floor was looking very comfy. Hopefully, I’ll live long enough to have a decent rest, but that was unlikely.

I thought back on the tempestuous day I had and sighed. There would be no use in trying to escape from the Pirates of Bargadan. There was a bounty out for my capture and I’m sure if I returned, Lady Alma would sell me down the river for a quick haksha. I shook my head, knowing it was better to stay on the wrong side of the law and out of Jared’s reach. Somewhere deep inside me I knew the day we would cross paths again would come, there was no way Jared would ever quit. But neither would I.
