~Heather’s P.O.V. ~

I wake up in a cold sweat and sitting upright. I’m breathing hard and every thing is dark around me, so I check the time… 2:38. Yes, I had the nightmare.

I searched my surroundings scared of finding who I as looking for. I spot Mason on his bed, his chest rising and falling in a steady rhythm. Somehow this calms me down a little.

TAP

The sound from the window makes me jump. Carefully I remove the curtain to reveal… a tree branch.

Taking deep breaths I settle back down into my covers.

“Are you ok?” Mason’s voice makes me bolt up, causing me to fall of the small couch-bed. I heard a chuckle… then a laugh… “Heather?” I could hear him trying to hold back his laughs. “Yeah, laugh, Mase!” I said irritated. I’m pretty sure he didn’t hear me; I was tangled in my blankets, which muffled my voice.

“No, no, I’m sorry Heather.” He stood up and came to help me get untangled from my mess. We were being so loud… good thing Mason’s mom works really late. “So… what happened?” he asked once I was free.

“I…” I took a deep breath. Mason needs to know… I thought. “The nightmares are back.” I looked down remembering the look on Devon’s face.

“Oh… Heth… It’s gonna be ok.” He gathered me in his arms, as silent tears escaped my eyes. “It’s ok Heather, they aren’t real. I promise.” He tightened his grip on me as more tears slipped down my cheeks.

“Don’t cry. You’re gonna make me cry…” he whispered into my hair. I wrapped my arms around him and buried my face in his neck, still crying silently. His strong arms squeezed my small body.

“Hey… shush. It’s gonna be ok. I’m here now.” He mumbled. I was so glad to have a friend who cared. He held me in the darkness, letting me soak him in tears.

“C-can I s-sleep next to y-you?” my voice was muffled by Mason’s shoulder.

Mason put his hands on my waist and gently pulled me off him. “Of course, you don’t need to ask.” He said as he wiped a tear off my face and tucked a loose strand of hair behind my ear.

I blushed from his gentle touch as if I were glass that could be broken. I looked up at him. His beautifully colored eyes were filled with love.

Friendly love… said my conscience. I sighed, because there would never be more to us than that…. Friends.

So caught up in my thoughts I almost didn’t notice him cup my face in his hands.

Friendly love… it repeated. OK! I GET IT!! It broke my heart. Unrequited love sucks!!!
