“Nate, are you serious right now?” The tone of my voice seemed to catch his attention.
“Yes.” He almost whispered, but before I could tell him to stop the car he continued on in a loud rant trying to justify himself. “I didn’t mean to! It’s just… It just happened! I care about you and I never meant to hurt you. It’s just that when you asked me I just couldn’t say no. You are amazing and beautiful and funny and smart and I never meant for this to happen.”
“But it did…..” I thought. My chest was aching and I felt like I couldn’t breathe.
Just as he turned to look at me, we went over a bump in the road causing a loud thump and the whole car to move.
“Stop. I think you just ran over something.”
Nate hit the brakes and raced out of the car in search of what he ran over. I get out of the car as well.
“What is it? What did I run over? Where did it go? Are you sure it wasn’t just that speed bump or something?”
“Yes. It was my heart you so brutally ran over,” I whispered to myself as I walked away, leaving him there searching for what he will never find.
