~Cara~

I stood in the corner quietly, waiting for someone to give me something to do so that I may help. The pain in my side was growing more and more, but I worked to press it away so I could be there in case Merlin needed me. He was laying there in pain and dying, while I stood here, with a prickle in my side. That seemed so small now.

Qwen was standing around Merlin, looking appalled. She looked at me.

"Lady Cara, go rest, we will look after Merlin," she said softly with worry in her voice. Merlin was clearly lingering in her every thought.

"No," I told her too tired to hide the exhaustion in my voice. "Merlin stayed by my side while I lay dying until I was well again. I will not leave him until he is well."

Gaius continued his work, not even taken in our words. Merlin was like a son to him. I knew he was hurting more than any of us.

"My Lady," Gwen said, "you must not, it is not the way."

I gave her a weak smile. "No my dear Gwen, it is not, but I do not care. My place is by my friend's side. Merlin is my friend, one of the truest ones I have ever had and I will not leave him until he is once again well or in his coffin." I tried not to sob at the last word, but was not very successful. "I was not by my dear Ewing's side when he died, and I will not repeat that mistake again."

                She nodded. "I understand."

"You are a kind girl dear Gwen, I am grateful to know you."

                "Same to you my Lady."

"Could you please feat Ellen for me?" I asked her pulling my hand from my side and holding it into the candle light for her to see the fresh blood.

A gasp escaped her mouth, but I quickly quieted her by putting some clean fingers to my lips and returning the red hand to my side. I pointed to Merlin to signify that he was more important right now, still I needed Elena and I did not want her to think that I would just so carelessly ask her to leave her dying friend's side.

Gwen nodded and quickly left the room.

I was now left with Gaius whispering to himself in a troubling ton. After a few minutes he stood and walked to the table and looking into the contents left in the goblet Merlin drank from.

As he pulled a petal out of it, I walked as Merlin shook in pain on his bed. The need to cry pushed on my eyes, but I refused.

"I fear magic was involved," Gaius said with pain in his voice.

"Is there anything I could do?" I asked him. I would let him know of my magic and gladly use it if it meant that Merlin would live.

"Do not let your powers known," he told me.

I stepped back, my heart quickening in my chest at his words. How could he know of my magic? Would he turn me in? Let me burn at the stake?

"Your secret is safe with me," Gaius assured me. "Your parents came to me when they discovered you and your sister's great power. I already knew about the line of magic that falls in your blood. You are unlike your sister and it is something you should be proud of."
