When you first held me,

You were far too young to understand,

You saw my story,

And flipped through my memories with sticky hands.

.

The next time you were older,

You ran across me by chance,

You figured out the broken meanings,

And tiny tears were shed.

.

You threw me in a fit,

For you hated my letters and what they said,

It began the unspirals of my bindings

But loved you all the more I did.

.

Then came the day you pushed me away,

You wrote me off into this bin,

It was dusty and scary,

I didn't like it, not one bit.

.

Now I was rented and tossed,

New people tearing my story apart

I grew to miss your sticky fingers,

And prayed for your tears, whatever the cost.

.

Soon my spine grew a bruise

And my words became faded,

But my heart was with you,

For it was to you that I was mated.

.

A few years pass and now I love this new place,

For I was pressed between your favorite journal,

And propped against your guitar case.

.

You were now a young adult,

Trying to find and mold yourself,

You seemed to find my words bitter-sweet,

And used my words as comfort when you felt defeat.

.

Over the years you grew fond of my hated parts,

Leafing my corners and filling me with your bookmarks.

.

I love you dammit, why can't I be rewritten?

Why can't you read upon my feelings of how I've grown so smitten?

.

Now come today and a new set of hands,

Young and nimble fingers staining my pages with medicine,

You've grown too old to read from within your bed,

So this lovely nurse whispers my story into your head...

.

It kills me to know you'll pass without my confession

That I couldn't return to you one caress,

Or even a loving look in your direction.

.

For in your perspective I'm just a book...

And you were clueless to my affections.
