  Chapter 3

Base

Stretching out, I grabbed my alarm clock off my locker at the side of my bed. It flashed 3:26. Leaning back I stretched again and stood up. The sun was now shining in my window, through my curtains, illuminating my room a bright blue. I decided not to open them and just leave them the way they were and get dressed.

Walking over to my wardrobe I pulled out a pair of short-shorts and my favourite purple top with the words ‘I want Cookies’ on the front. Throwing them on I walked down stairs bare foot, my feet still ached from running down the Champ de Mars last night . . . in high heels. Ugh! Never again I swear. Thankfully our floor had carpet instead of wood. The carpet was gentle and warm on my feet, which was relaxing. When I reached the bottom of the stairs I heard voices down the hall towards the living room and game room. I presumed most people would be there at this point in the day, but I decided to locate any strays that were around elsewhere.

There were seven of us living here at the moment, eight if you include Richie. Tyler, Chris and I have been here the longest.

Tyler was brought here first when his parents abandoned him; He was 3 years old and didn’t know much of what was happening. Richie saved him, while he was visiting the area on his travels. He brought him here and let him live here with him.

Chris was the next to arrive, when he was 5 years old, two years after Tyler was saved. Richie had found him in an orphanage in Italy. He was left there from birth and when Richie adopted him it was the happiest moment of his life, he gain a ‘dad’, so to speak, and a brother.

When both Tyler and Chris were eight I arrived; Richie saved me after tracking me down. I was six and extremely scared, Tyler was a friend and helped me through losing my sister, although it still hurts sometimes. And Chris always made me laugh when I was sad. In a way I also gained siblings and that made me smile whenever I thought about it.

We were the main people in the house until recently when Amber, Kim, Michael and Dean arrived. They came a few years ago, all in the same year, with short gaps between their arrivals.

They all had a similar story to one and another. They lived a pleasant normal life until they reached their teen years where they started to notice things happening to them that weren’t normal. They said they all ran away when other people started to notice and harassing them. That’s when Richie, of course, found them. Sometimes he just does that, shows up with people.

As I walked around the house I didn’t find any strays so I headed in to the living room, where all the voices could be heard now. Walking into the living room I saw Chris and Amber, the happy lovey-dovey couple, sitting on the love seat in the corner laughing and having their own little conversation. While Tyler, Dean and Michael were fighting over the remote, with Kim sitting down on the recliner sofa enjoying the view.

Walking up behind her I leaned down, resting on the head on the sofa with my arms folded and my chin resting on top of my folded arms.

‘’What’s that about?’’ I asked Kim, nodding in the direction of the boys.
