11: To Shine
(Blank Verse / Quatrains)
I saw their eyes, their stares of hatred
Boring deeply through my soul;
I heard their words, their whispered rumors
Slashing through my withered pride.
I've often feared their harsh reproaches
Branding me a heartless dove;
I've often yearned for it to stop and
Grant me just a bare respite.
But no. No matter what I did to
Prove myself an equal peer,
They gave me not a chance to shine—
So in the darkness of my plight,
I'll shine for me and no one else.
