Blood.

Everywhere.

The battered bodies of my comrades covered the ground like trash.

No. Not trash.

Like the heroes that they were.

Like the heroes who gave their lives and every last drop of their blood to protect those they love.

To protect the human race.

We may not have signed up for this, but we are the human race's only hope since we are the only Starrens left on earth since the barrier between earth and Starrenia was put up.

Starrenia does not know what's happening on earth or what we are facing.

We tried asking for help, but we discovered that he has people intercepting our messages over there.

Starrenia is in danger but before we think of warning or saving them, we have to save ourselves.

I feel tears flow down my face as I see familiar faces on the ground.

"We can't hold on much longer! " Sren yells while killing off another shadow crawler, only for it to be immediately replaced by another.

That was the problem, they kept coming.

They seem innumerable.

"You have to do it!" He yells again.

"That's the last resort! " I yell back.
"If I do it, we all die".

That was a plan for the worst case scenario.
It was a back up plan we never planned on using, a sacrifice we, I, never planned on making.

"We are Starre-" Sren was suddenly cut off.

I raise my head and see him slowly drop to the ground with a hole in his chest.

His still beating heart in the hand of a shadow crawler.

I feel my stomach churning as pain racks though my body. I feel fire in my blood as our link breaks.

I hold myself back from screaming in pain.

No. No. I mutter to myself.
No no no no no no.

I raise my head, the shadow crawler is looking right at me. Its red eyes glow as it takes a step forward.

I feel anger.
Red hot.
And blazing in my blood stream.
It covers me.
It fills me.
And then, I let it take over.

It spreads out and burns every shadow crawler close to me, giving everyone, still alive, a chance to take a breath, but they will be back soon, very soon.

That explosion took too much out of me.

Way more than I was willing to give.

I fell on my knees taking deep breaths.

"We have lost" someone said.

I feel everyone's desolation.

"Earth is gone". They go on to say.

NO.

"No" I say with determination.

" Earth is not gone" I raise my head and look at everyone.

"Earth still has a chance, if we are willing to make the sacrifice ". I look into their eyes.

"Are we? "

Silence hangs in the air.

We hear a howl in the distance.

The crawlers are coming back.

We don't have much time.

We remain in the same position even as we hear them drawing closer.

"I am" The first person says.

"I am" The others follow.

"We are going to die anyway. So why not die giving earth another chance" someone says.

Pride runs through my veins as I look into the eyes of my comrades who are still alive.

"We are Starrens" I say with a smile.

"We are protectors of man"
They reply.

We are going to die.
We know that.
There is no hope for us.
But there is hope for man because of us.

I am happy.
So long as there is hope.

The shadow crawlers are less than ten feet away from us when I start the spell while someone else draws the symbols in the air.

Blue light shines and lights up the dark sky.

Wind blows, dust rises in the air.

My hair flies everywhere.

My feet leaves the ground.

They are here.

The others immediately start fighting as they try to give me time to complete the ritual.

Bodies drop.
My tears drop as I say the last word of the spell.

I cough out blood as I drop to the ground.

"It is done " I croak.

They immediately stop fighting.

The shadow crawlers freeze and slowly turn to ash.

The world goes silent. We are the only ones left on the field.

We stare at each other silently.

I put my right fist above my heart and stand up slowly with my last strength.
The others follow suit.

"We are Starrens" I croak, barely audible.

"We are protec-" they do not finish.

I watch them turn to ash.

A tear trails down my face as I fall on my back my fist still over my heart.

I watch the sun rise as my life force leaves my body.

I slowly smile as the light fades away.

At least there's hope for man.
