In the late 1990s, I worked as a delivery person in the NYC Garment District. There are times when I really have to really use the bathroom. There was an open to the public restroom inside the off-track betting (OTB) shop on 7th Avenue, near West 38th Street. It was usually crowded with gamblers, but the restrooms were free and open. I was glad that they had two stalls, a regular and a handicapped one, instead of a single toilet. However, neither of them had doors. One day, I walked in and saw an old white man sitting on the regular toilet, reading some betting forms. There were also urinals and sinks in front of the stalls. I didn't want to sit there and risk being seen by anyone I knew or worked with. So, I left and looked for another restroom with more privacy. There was an odd moment in that restroom, I saw this skinny black woman was brazenly sitting on the regular toilet, she was probably doing number two. I had seen many people of the opposite sex on public toilets before, but this was different. A cafe occupies that location now.
