Lesson 3: KO-SO-A-DO , COLORS , Conversation

In Japanese, there is a pattern of words that comes up many times. It is the ko-so-a-do pattern. In this lesson there are two ko-so-a-do patterns: KOre, SOre, Are, DOre, and KOcchi, SOcchi, Acchi, DOcchi

KO - Close enough to touch

SO - Sort of close, but not enough to touch

A - In the distance, Definitely not close.

DO - Question word.

THE TOPIC MARKER   WA

[topic] + wa + [question or description]

example:

Ashita wa getsuyoobi desu.- Tomorrow is Monday.

Yukari-san wa nihonjin desu. - Yukari is Japanese.

Banana wa kiiro desu. - Bananas are yellow.

Kore wa nan desu ka. - What is this?

Sore wa kagami desu. - That is a mirror.

Are wa banana desu. - That over there is a banana.

COLORS

Akai - Red

Aoi - Blue

Kiiroi - yellow

Midori No - green

Orenji No - Orange

Murasaki No - Purple

Kuroi - black

Shiroi - white

Chairoi  - brown

Furui / Atarashii - oLD / New

Toshita totta / wakai - old / young

Ureshii / kanashii - happy / sad

hayai / osoi - fast / slow

chikai / tooi - near / far

Sore wa ii desu ne! - That's great!

Sore wa taihen desu ne. - That's terrible.

iidesu yo. - Okay

Wakarimasen - I don't know

Juuyoo desu. - It's important

ki o tsukete - Be careful

Tanoshinde kudasai - Have fun.

Ganbatte kudasai - Good luck!

Conversation

Hajimemashite - Nice to meet you. / How do you do.

Jean to moushimasu. -  I am Jean -->> although there are other ways to say your name, this is an excellent way to introduce yourself. It is very polite and humble at the same time.

Yoroshiku onegaishimasu. - Let's be nice to each other.

 Nansai desu ka. - How old are you?

Ni juu ichi sai desu. - I am 21 years old.

Nansai ni miemasu ka. - How old do I look?

kyuu sai ni miemasu. - you look 9 years old.

Wakarimasu ka. - Do you understand?

Hai, wakarimasu. - Yes, I understand

iie, wakarimasen. - No, I don't understand

wakarimasen - I don't understand

Mou ichido itte kudasai. - Please say it once again.

Motto yukkuri itte kudasai. - Please speak more slowly

Nihongo ga hanasemasu ka. - Can you speak Japanese?

eigo ga hanasemasu ka. - Can you speak English?

Sukoshi. - A little

Zenzen. - Not at all.

Nihongo o benkyou shiteimasu. - I am studying Japanese.
