TW: mentions of abuse, name calling
-

"Shit." You snapped, freezing when you heard a slight rustle from the back seat of the car.

You sighed and turned back to see your twin boys sound asleep. With a small smile, you began to wonder when the next person would pass by you on this long stretch of road.

You got out of the car and walked around it in inspection, trying to see what had gone wrong.

"Shit, flat tire. How great." You groaned.

"What's wrong, daddy?" Your son, Eli, asked, quietly, having undone his seatbelt and gotten out.

"Oh, nothing, my star. Would you help me hold the flashlight, please?" You asked, holding out the flashlight to him.

Eli nodded, eagerly, and took the light from your grasp, shining where you had been shining it before.

You thanked him and moved to the trunk, opening it up to find the jack and spare tire.

You made haste as the sun was already disappearing.

-

Eli had gotten tired after helping you, though he did seem entertained as he watched you change your tire.

You glanced up at the rear view mirror to see both Eli and Matt sound asleep.

You had tried your GPS but couldnt find another town for thirty miles and there was no way your spare was going to make it that far.

You drove until you saw a sign that read 'Come Visit Trudy's World Famous House of Wax!'

You turned off with the directions from the sign and found yourself on a long stretch of road.

You could almost feel the spare tire giving out and turned off into a large clearing with a sigh. You parked and turned off the car, silently opening the door.

You popped the trunk and took out the tent, setting it up and putting the sleeping bags and blankets inside. You barely woke the boys, unbuckling Matt only to find Eli had never buckled himself back in when he helped you before.

You chuckled, glad something hadn't happened on the way to the clearing.

You tucked the twins in, kissing each of them goodnight. Warily, you turned to your mobile, checking the time.

It was nearly eleven. You were glad the spare had made it this far.

You decided to see what you could take with you on your trek to Ambrose, hoping someone there could help you.

You started to pull together a small backpack of necessities when a truck pulled up to the clearing, high beams on.

You lifted a hand to shield your face. Somehow the ordeal seemed menacing.

You moved to approach the truck.

"Am I on your property?" You called, loudly, combatting the distance and running motor.

The truck pulled closer and small hands gripped your thigh. You looked down to see Matt.

You shushed him and ushered him back to the tent.

"Daddy will take care of it, okay?"

Before you could call out to the truck again, it drove out of the clearing in reverse, speeding off.

Confused, but happy they were gone, you turned and got in the tent.

-

"I told you, whore! You stay home like you're supposed to!" He screamed at you.

You flinched, more worried for Eli and Matt. Those two boys had grown up in an environment you hadn't meant for them to.

Your ex-boyfriend turned out to be really abusive towards you. Before, he was charming and gentle, encouraging you on every matter.

You wished you'd noticed the way he'd reacted when he came home to find you had adopted Eli and Matt.

They were just small toddlers then.

You wished you had left long before the abuse became physical.

-

Eli woke you up, but the rancid smell came after, encouraging your conscious out of sleep.

It was a very soft pink outside, and too early to be awake in your opinion.

"Daddy, what is that?" Eli questioned, covering his nose. You contemplated.

"Might be a dead deer." You mused, tucking him back in.

-

Once the sun had fully risen, you woke Eli and Matt, telling them to wait while you took down the tent.

They busied themselves by playing a small game of eye spy, although quietly.

Old habits die hard.

You folded the tent fabric into a small square and put it back in the trunk along with the metal frame pieces. With the necessities backpack on your back, you shut the trunk.

The wind blew the smell back at you and both of your boys covered their noses with their shirts.

Matt, however, seemed curious, wandering towards it as fast as his little legs could take him.

"Matt!" You called, "Eli, come with me."

You raced after Matt, barely catching him before he tumbled down a hill.

You pulled him towards you, realizing the terrible smell belonged to a road kill pile. Eli nudged your side as you saw a man dumping a few dead possums into the pile, dragging a deer to the edge.

You carefully made your way down, hilding onto Eli's hand. Eli held onto Matt so none of you would fall in.

You circled around the pit, giving the man a startle, "Hello."

"O-Oh! Why hello there." He smiled to you.

You smiled back, kindly, "Would you happen to know the direction of the town Ambrose?"

"I do, it's about fifteen miles up this stretch of road." He said, hopping down from the bed of his truck. You smiled.

"Thank you, come on boys!"

Eli and Matt rushed to your side. You started your trek down the road when the man from before pulled up beside of you.

"I could give ya' a ride." He offered.

You smiled and nodded, "Thank you, kindly."

-

After you situated the boys in the truck, you leaned over them to shut the door.

You were squshed up against the man, but paid little mind to it.

-

The drive was bumpy, but after the man, Lester, had introduced himself, the two of you chatted and Eli and Matt remained silently observant. It was, unfortunately, normal for them.
