"30 Days"
Chapter Nine: Awkward

(Excuse the interruption, but this will be the final chapter. I've condensed the rest of the story into this one (slightly) long, chapter. I hope the ending works well, and doesn't seem choppy or rushed. Sorry for the inconvenience. Enjoy!)

Their friendship, if you could call the barely stable system of exchange that, was rocky to say the least. It had started from hatred, turning to tolerance than back to ice-cold ignorance. Slowly though, it was warming up, and the once ravine sized hole between them was starting to look more like a pothole. Soon, they'd fully bridge the distance between them, becoming closer without issue.

Or at least, it would've been like that if Amity wasn't having a serious issue.

She first noticed it September 14th, three days after beginning the letter exchange with Luz. It was some effect Luz seemed to have on her, just some small warmth in her heart that made Amity smile.

The almost microscopic effect only grew with time, and it seemed to change Amity in little ways. She'd smile more, and wave at people she knew when she walked past them in the hallways. Things she once considered arbitrary, like talking to the other students before class started, began to feel normal.

Amity found getting to know people to be more enjoyable than it was when she was younger; having to memorize a potential investor as a fact instead of a person wasn't as interesting.

On September 15th, she had written another letter to Luz, asking her friend how basketball was going. Amity wrote her letter neatly, before sealing it and going to place it under Boscha's door for delivery. As she began to walk away, the events from early in the week replayed in Amity's mind.

"I'm not Amazon and I don't do same day shipping." Boscha grumbled. "You'll have to wait until the next available time slot."

"Is there an early shipping fee?" Amity asked, leaning against the wall beside the door.

"It'll be payment enough when I don't have to pass your love letters back and forth." Boscha laughed as she grabbed the letter off the ground.

"They're not love letters!" Amity exclaimed, almost startling herself with how automatic the response was.

"They aren't love letters. I don't love her." Amity mumbled quietly as she turned the door knob and entered her room.

On the morning of September 16th, Amity walked to the cafeteria, deciding to get breakfast early before going to her classes. Since none of the tables were empty, she'd normally stand near the entrance so she could leave quickly, but not today.

With about as much grace as a person awkwardly holding a powdered donut could have, Amity sat down at a table with a few people she recognized.

"Oh hey Amity!" Gus exclaimed as he looked over.

"Good morning." Amity replied before taking a bite of her breakfast.

"A friend of your's?" The student beside Gus asked.

"Yeah, we met at that library, the one between the town park and Raine's." Gus elaborated, gestured with his hands as he spoke.

"Raine's?" Amity asked curiously as she looked between the pair.

"There's this sweet little cafe called Raine's near the town park. Their drinks and music are great, totally recommend checking it out." The student said as Gus took out his phone.
