Chapter Two

Adeola turned on the lumpy sack stuffed with cotton that she called a mattress. It scratched against her skin, making it harder for her to sleep, and making her hotter than she already was.

Adeola groaned and smacked the bed in angst. Why do we have be be treated unfairly because of the colour of my skin?

She sighed and sat up. She wasn't going to get any sleep tonight. Getting out of the bed, Adeola silently moved towards the door, being careful not to wake anyone up, like she had done so many times. She slowly opened the cabin door, and winced when it creaked.

She spun around to see if any of her family members heard her. Once their snores filled her ears, she sighed a breath of relief.

Adeola closed the door and made her way to the fields, letting the warm summer breeze blow across her face.

She walked until the grasses surrounding her were tallert than her, and she sat down on the path, closed her eyes and took a deep breath in.

When working on the plantation, Adeola never got to admire the nature around her. She was always either running up and down the field to get water for the other slaves, or sometimes picking the cotton when her momma's fingers got sore.

After about a minute, a twig snapped. Adeola's eyes shot open, and she looked around her, seeing if she spotted something.

The wind rustled the grass, and her heart slowed, thinking it was just her imagination. Shaking her head, she got up and turned around, and almost screamed.

A wolf with yellow eyes was staring into hers.

Adeola gasped and stumbled backwards, and tripped over her feet and steadied herself. Instead, she moved closer to the wolf, feeling drawn in... like it was comforting her.

She raised her hand and rubbed in between the wolf's ears. It whined and nuzzled his head in her hand.

What am I doing? Adeola asked herself. I'm playing with a werewolf who probably wants to eat me!

She dropped her hand and started to run away back towards the cabins.

When Adeola reached her door, she heard a howl in the distance. Fear coursed through her and she slipped back into her cabin without another noise.
