Skulduggery came up with the code "the sparrow flies south for the winter" because it reminds him of a day from his past which he spent with the other Dead Men, one where they weren't in danger or on a mission and got to enjoy a bit of time off just being friends. They spotted an unusually large group of sparrows, and Skulduggery was the one to inform the others that the sparrows were flying south for the winter.
