the knowledge of what his father had told him about cherry and her family worried him each night.
it clouded his mind, not letting him escape.
was she really a terrible person? what did her father do that was so bad?
was he so wrong for being friends with her?
he would do anything for her.
but that meant that he was constantly holding onto a branch on the edge of a cliff, waiting for someone to find out.
he had lied to his father about ignoring her.
his whole life was in the hand clutching the branch, but he'd let it go if it meant holding her hand.
but he couldn't tell anyone; he had pepper, and all his friends were aware of that.
but why didn't pepper make him feel the way cherry did?
