As the plane decended into DFW, he couldn't help but stare out of the window of the 747 that was bringing him home for good. This would be the first time he'd stepped foot on American soil in eight years. Eight years is a long time to be away from home. A long time to be away from family, and a long time to be away from those who he once called friends.

When he'd turned eighteen he'd made a decision that many teenage boys make right after high school. Opting out of college and signing up for the armed forces. The air force recruiter made the decision seem so easy. They had fed him the line about money for college, on the job training, and choosing where he'd want to be deployed. They didn't tell about how hard boot camp was, about even though was stationed in Germany, he might spend most of his time deployed into a war zone. During his eight years of being stationed in Germany, He'd two tours of Korea and two tours in Afghanistan.

As they circled DFW waiting for permission to land, he couldn't help but think about his life over the last eight years. He couldn't help but think about those who were signed up for four more years. He had thought long and hard about signing those reenlistment papers. In the end, he knew he just couldn't do it anymore. He could no longer live the life he had been living.

Coming home didn't automatically mean coming home. There is a three day waiting before they could be released into the public. After being in a war zone and leaving the military comes with a debriefing period.

It's hard to say whether he'd miss anything about being in the Air Force, but he would miss the comradery between fellow soldiers and knowing that someone  always had his back. More than anything he missed his family, he missed his friends and he missed her. He wondered where she was, he'd thought about her often over the years. Most of all he thought about that moment when they stopped being best friends.
