Alec couldn't remember a time in his life where he had been equally nervous. He had always been a nervous guy, not with the greatest patience but now, it felt unbearable. It didn't help that Magnus told him over and over what a great and wise warlock Diego — the man with the green eyes — was or that he would never do anything to harm a soul.

The problem was, that Alec didn't know that himself and despite the fact that he trusted his husband, he felt unsafe in this place. Maybe it was also because not all the Warlocks in the committee were as good as Diego and even Magnus seemed to feel slightly uncomfortable when some eyes fixated him.

"It's been almost an hour, Magnus. An hour! Max is probably scared to death, in pain, thinking we abandoned him and don't love him anymore." He felt Magnus' soft squeezes on his shoulder with every word he said.

They were seated at the side on a bench, the Warlock had an arm around his Shadowhunter, to reassure him. Alec however knew that it was also to protect him and make all the Downworlders see that they would have to deal with Magnus first if they had a problem with Alec.

"You would be a great fiction writer, love. Heard of Archive of our own? You can literally publish anything there."

Alec rolled his eyes. "What are you talking about?"

"I'm talking about the fact that you're making stories in your head, the worst outcomes possible in order to be prepared. Which is a normal thing to do but not very helpful in such a situation."

"Well maybe," Alec snapped, "the problem is that you just let a stranger take our baby somewhere to play tricks on his psyche and now we can only wait and get crazy over possible scenarios!"

"Let's not get overdramatic." The Asian man petted Alec's shoulder, causing the dark-haired to clench his jaw annoyed.

Of course, it wasn't Magnus' fault and Alec knew that

Of course, it wasn't Magnus' fault and Alec knew that. He also knew that this was a very necessary procedure but he couldn't stop acting that way. It was simply what he had always done when he was scared or stressed: Snap at everyone, push people away and hope he could just cope with his emotions by himself later sometimes.

Before he could answer something that he would regret later, a swishing sound was to be heard, followed by yellow steam. As it cleared, Diego and Max had appeared back in the room, right on the same spot where they had vanished.

Alec jumped up and rushed over to them. Max was alive and he didn't cry, that was something. However, he couldn't be sure if his baby was under a spell and whether or not he had hidden wounds.

The baby reached out with his hands when he saw his father and Alec quickly grabbed him out of the Warlock's arms, feeling a sense of relief because the other one let him.

"Hey Maxie, it's okay, Daddy is here." He whispered reassuringly, wondering at what point in his life he had started referring to himself in the third person.
