I open my eyes
Already sore from sleeping
I guess I didn't move enough
I slept hard
And paid the price.

Ankle assessment:
Stiff; clicks a little
Two years ago I fell
The tendon tore
The bone was chipped.

Sacroiliac joints aflame
Sometimes dull and achy
Like a rusty hinge
It grinds me down
It's not so bad today.

Knees at attention
One won't bend
The other stiff and crook'd
I pull them up to my nose
"Thunk"
Something else pulls loose.

The pain is like electricity
My nerves on fire
Every branch of spinal cord
Is damaged in its own way
Even my brain.

But it's time to make breakfast
So up I get, medicating
And medicating
Pills and smoke for me
But oatmeal for the kid.
