Driven by a profound sense of betrayal and disillusionment, Nancy makes a desperate decision to flee the Foot Clan. In her frantic escape through the labyrinthine sewers and dark alleys of New York, she quite literally bumps into Leonardo, who is out on patrol. Startled but recognizing her, Leo immediately readies for a fight. However, Nancy is not attacking. Her guard is down, her eyes reflecting a pain and desperation he'd never seen in his enemy. Cautiously, Leo asks what happened. Overcoming her deep-seated animosity, Nancy, trembling, reveals the truth: the Foot Clan used her, their mission is corrupt, and she can no longer be a part of it. Despite his natural caution and the immediate objections he knows his brothers will have, Leonardo, seeing something genuine in her eyes and perhaps recognizing a kindred spirit dedicated to a cause (even if misguided), makes an unprecedented offer. He invites her back to the Lair, to join his team, even if just temporarily, to escape Shredder's wrath.
