Deacon always knew his parents were overbearing. While studying for medical school, he looked into psychology from time to time, too. But he'd never confront them about it. His parents only wanted the best for him, right? They never hit him or abused him in any way, shape, or form, so he didn't deserve to feel bad.
Deacon didn't had the right to dislike his childhood when others were suffering much worse than him.
So when him and Chase enter a book that leads to the heroine's mother acting like a carbon-copy of Deacon's, he finally snaps. He could deal with the pain, but no way in hell would he allow anybody to make his cousin feel the same way.
