Following the events of the main series, the power balance among the major factions has drastically shifted. Across the 23 wards of Tokyo, the peerages of minor houses clash in the Imperial Rating to fight for supremacy-a ranking system created to reinforce the underworld's weakened pillars. Right in the thick of it stands Lyra Sanguis, the Crimson Queen: an overwhelmed girl determined to restore her cursed house to its former glory, all while the entire underworld despises her as the "cursed child." And then there is Ren-sixteen, exhausted, sarcastic, and someone who honestly just wants some peace and quiet. He chalks up his headaches to stress and dismisses the pounding in his veins as just his imagination. The thought that something older and hungrier than anything this city has ever known is sleeping inside him doesn't even cross his mind-not yet, at least.
